Does Hypoallergenic Eyelash Extension Adhesive Exist?

Can you trust the "hypoallergenic" label? The term on the label does not mean the product will not trigger an allergic reaction in some consumers. The label is a reflection of what each manufacturer considers "hypoallergenic".

Understanding Hypoallergenic Labels

In Europe, for a product to carry the "Hypoallergenic" label, it must undergo a laboratory test known as "HRIPT". This is a Human Repeated Insult Patch Test, aimed at determining potentially harmful skin allergic or irritation reactions. This test, carried out on volunteers following national and international standards, EU directives, and current legal regulations under dermatologist supervision, validates that the product has a formula minimizing the risk of allergic reactions or skin irritation. However, this doesn't mean the product is 100% hypoallergenic.

What does eyelash glue contain?

• Cyanoacrylate: This ingredient makes the glue dry quickly. It ensures that the adhesive dries in seconds and reliably keeps lashes in place for several weeks. Cyanoacrylate is the main component of all professional eyelash extension adhesives.
• PMMA: This provides long-lasting retention. In simple terms, PMMA or Poly(methyl methacrylate) is the agent that forms a firm, strong bond. Therefore, PMMA is what ensures lashes stay in place for a long time.
• Carbon Black: This ingredient provides an intense dark color. It is formed by reacting a hydrocarbon fuel like oil or gas with a limited amount of combustion air at 1320-1540°C (2400-2800°F). The unburnt carbon accumulates in the form of very fine black, fluffy particles.

Conclusions

Eyelash extension adhesive ingredients can vary from one product to another, so it's crucial to pay attention when inspecting and examining the ingredients. Be sure to note which products best suit your expertise level and your clients based on their unique needs and sensitivities.
