Understanding Allergic Reactions in Beauty Treatments
It is essential to understand how allergic reactions develop to prevent and manage them properly during beauty treatments.
Mechanisms of Reaction Development
Allergic reactions are the result of three mechanisms: allergenic, non-allergenic, and combined:
- Allergenic: Upon first exposure, the body recognizes an allergen (such as food, medicine, pollen) as an antigen and produces antibodies. This raises sensitivity to irritants. Repeated exposure can destroy cells that contain antibodies, releasing histamine and causing swelling.
- Non-allergenic: Histamine is released in response to substances like insect venom, medications, or food irritants.
- Combined: In hereditary angioedema, proteins in the blood complement system can be activated by stressful situations, leading to swelling.
Informed Consent and Allergy Testing
Before a beauty treatment that involves contact with the skin, it is imperative to offer an allergy test. If the client declines, they must sign an informed consent form indicating that they are aware of the potential risks and will not make any claims.
Managing Allergic Reactions
In case of signs of an allergic reaction, it's important to:
- Stop the treatment and remove or neutralize the allergen.
- If there is difficulty breathing, ensure access to fresh air.
- In case of worsening symptoms, call emergency services and provide details about the reaction.
- If there is swelling of tissues, apply cold or hot compresses to alleviate the affected area.
