Primer and Degreaser in Eyelash Extensions: Differences and When to Use Them

What is the degreaser and when to use it?

The degreaser is used to increase adhesion and minimize the possibility of artificial lashes detaching. It is essential to remove epithelial particles, dust, and grease from the surface of natural lashes. Before applying eyelash extensions, it is recommended to perform a degreasing process to prevent the glue from forming a smooth layer and the artificial lashes from detaching prematurely.

If a professional lacks sufficient experience or is too conservative and decides not to use the degreaser, the final result may be of poor quality. Grease prevents proper adhesion of the lashes, which can result in poorly applied lashes and a shorter duration of the desired effect.

Why is using just a makeup remover not enough?

Using only a makeup remover is not enough, as the degreaser is much more versatile in removing:

  • Dust, inevitably present in the air and deposited on the lashes;
  • Makeup residues, even after thorough removal;
  • Cream residues;
  • Epithelial particles;
  • Grease that covers each hair.

When to use the Primer?

There are differing opinions on the utility of the Primer in the eyelash extension protocol. Some consider it to be a marketing strategy with no real utility, while other studies support its use as an important part of the process.

The Primer contains a high percentage of alkali and neutralizes the acidity of natural lashes, creating favorable conditions for the glue to work better. When it evaporates almost instantly, it dries the top layer of the natural lash cuticle and makes it rougher, improving glue adhesion.

When should the Primer NOT be used?

The Primer should not be applied if the client's natural lashes are brittle, dry, damaged, dehydrated, or dull, as it could further dry and damage the lash. On the other hand, it can be applied if the lashes are healthy and well-pigmented.

Important: The Primer does NOT replace the Degreaser

It is essential to remember that the Primer and Degreaser are two different products with distinct functions and should not be interchanged. Both should be used correctly to achieve optimal results in the application of eyelash extensions.
